Welcome to the Spanish of California Lab at the University of California Riverside

From XIX century manuscripts to conversations with Siri, we seek to understand Spanish language in California. We are also interested in how social media shapes the communication in minoritized languages. Our approach is multidimensional: from Sociolinguistics, to History, to Cultural (hi)stories. Our goal is to recover and piece together the linguistic and cultural history of Alta California and contemporary California as well as other minoritized communities.
